Photo Rejuvenation / Sun Damage

Remove the effects of sun damage on your skin

The main cause of photo-aging of the skin is long-term sun damage, this will affect the skin in different ways depending of skin type and ethnicity. Examples of sun damage: benign pigmented lesions such as solar lentigines, ephelides, enlarged pores and wrinkles, all arise from sun exposure as well as the natural aging of the skin.

Pigmented lesions can vary in size, shape and colour. The Ellipse Selective Waveband Technology (SWT®) treatment works by directing well-controlled pulses of light into the upper skin layer. The light is absorbed by two of the body's own natural chromophores - melanin in the pigmented areas and haemoglobin in the blood. Both these pigments convert the light energy into heat. This heat is used to destroy the parts of the cells in which the melanin is stored, and to damage the walls of the vessels supplying blood to the areas where vascular damage is seen. This technique is called "Selective Photothermolysis".

The visible light produced by the Ellipse SWT® system is carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and right amount of energy to destroy the targets without damaging surrounding tissue. Photo rejuvenation is a quick and simple treatment, that does not interfere with your normal daily routine, and repairs sun-damage found on the face, neck, chest and hands.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Wrinkles or rhytids enhanced by the degradation in skin quality are a natural part of the skin aging process where the skin becomes thinner and loses its elasticity.

Poikiloderma of Civatte

Poikiloderma of Civatte is a condition that mainly affects the sides of the neck and the upper chest. It consists of a combination of diffuse redness, and pigment changes. Similar changes may also be seen in skin that has been treated previously with radiotherapy. Poikiloderma of Civatte develops with age, the exact cause is unknown, but contributing factors include fair skin, accumulated sun exposure, photosensitising components of cosmetics and toiletries, especially perfumes, and hormonal factors.

Diffuse Redness

Flushing, erythrosis, blotchiness and Rosacea appear when the skin's vessels are weakened. The cause of this is mainly genetic but may worsen by prolonged sun exposure. The redness often increases with age.

Sun-induced pigment

The most common sun induced pigment are solar lentigines and ephelides. Though sun exposure is the main contributor ethnicity and genetic predisposition should also be considered.

Freckles / Ephilides

Most often seen in fair skinned individuals, ephelides are caused by an overproduction of melanosomes, changing the colour of the skin.

Age spots / liver spots / solar lentigo

The colors range from light brown to red or black and are mainly found on, hands, face, shoulders, arms and forehead, and the scalp (if bald), the skin most exposed to the sun.
